It started FOUR YEARS AGO, when I heard an old hymn with a new twist. I LOVE the old hymns! I also love the blues/jazz/gospel style that I was raised with and that is so much a part of who I am. It's a sound that touches you to your core! So I was discussing the idea of a hymns project with Jordan Cole and he asked, "So Mama, what exactly IS a hymn to you?" And he made me think. We think of hymns as just those songs in the old hardback books in the church pews. But Webster's defines a hymn as "a song of praise to God". Well, I'd say one or two (or maybe a few hundred?) of those have been written in the past couple of decades! And I smiled and realized we don't have to put hymns in a box. So this project is a compilation of some of my favorite traditional hymns, together with some of my favorite contemporary hymns.
